We are delighted to announce our new CT cardiac imaging services on the North Shore – CT Calcium Score and CT Coronary Angiography.  This in addition to MRI cardiac imaging services already offered, reinforces our commitment to providing a comprehensive service to our local community using the latest technology and four of the region’s top cardiologists to deliver nothing less than outstanding patient care.

What is a CT Coronary Angiogram?

A computed tomography coronary angiogram (CTCA) is an imaging test that looks at the arteries that supply the heart with blood. Unlike traditional coronary angiograms, CT angiograms do not use a catheter threaded through the blood vessels from the groin to the heart. CTCA is used primarily to check for narrowed arteries in the heart that could explain chest pain or risk for a heart attack.

The CT coronary angiogram procedure uses a powerful X-ray machine that produce images of the heart and its blood vessels. The procedure is minimally-invasive with the need for an injection in the forearm only so there is no need to stay in hospital after the examination.

Both CT and traditional coronary angiograms expose you to radiation. If there is known coronary artery disease, a traditional coronary angiogram may be a better imaging option as specialised treatment for coronary artery disease can be performed during that procedure.

TRG Imaging has a modern Siemens 128 slice state-of-the-art CT scanner which has a radiation reduction software package to enable rapid scanning and very low radiation dose.

What is a CT Calcium Score Test?

A CT calcium score test is a specialized X-ray test using a CT Scanner that provides detailed pictures to enable the detection and measurement of calcium-containing plaque in the arteries of the heart (coronary arteries).

Plaque inside the arteries of the heart can restrict or block the flow of blood to the muscle of the heart. The CT Calcium Score Test can identify possible coronary artery disease before there are signs and symptoms. The outcome of the test may indicate the need for treatment such as medication or lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of heart attack or other heart problems.
